Diabetes is a serious disease that affects the glucose levels in the body. People with diabetes are insulin deficient, meaning their bodies do not properly use insulin or do not have enough insulin. Insulin is the hormone that the body uses to transform sugars and starches into energy. Insulin is what is needed for cells to absorb glucose, which is an essential sugar. There have been several diabetes advancements over the years, however there is still no cure for the disease.

There are two different types of diabetes. Type 1 diabetes is when the body fails to produce insulin. Type 2 is when the body develops a resistance to insulin. Over 18 million people in the United States alone suffer from diabetes. Many people are living with diabetes and do not even know it. This is because the symptoms of early diabetes are similar to those of other medical conditions. These symptoms include dry mouth, hunger, weight loss, fatigue, frequent urination and blurred vision.

Recent Diabetes Advancements
Diabetes advancements and research show that the disease is genetic. You are more likely to develop diabetes if someone in your family has been diagnosed with it. Diabetes has also been linked to early nutritional habits. Many older people who suffer from obesity and do not exercise may be more likely to develop diabetes. Diabetes often leads to other medical conditions such as heart disease, stroke, circulatory problems and blindness. In fact, diabetes is now the leading cause in blindness among adults in the United States.

There have been many diabetes advancements in treatment options over the past few decades. Most diabetes sufferers manage their disease by taking daily insulin level tests, exercising regularly and following strictly regulated diets. Stress management is also important for treating diabetes. Most diabetes sufferers also take insulin shots or pills to replace the insulin that is missing in their bodies. Studies have shown that glyconutrients may also be helpful in reversing the effects of diabetes.
